Summer Reading Club outreach at the Nick Nicolle Centre

Cheryl Brown of QLNB reads at the Nick Nicolle Centre

QLNB has been having fun with the gang at the Nick Nicolle Centre on Wednesdays.

We stop by the Lobby Library between 4 and 5 to read books and up-date Summer Reading Club (SRC) booklets. This year's SRC theme is exploration through time, so we started with the deep past - the dinosaur world of 65 to 250 million years ago!  This was our kick-off event, so we had a book give-away, colouring activities, a fossil table and more.

The next week we had fun reading and learning about Viking life, followed by a week on the medieval world of castles, knights and dragons. Next week looks like pirates and parrots, followed up by a forward looking, final Wednesday of space travel.

So, if you're at or near the Centre on the next couple of Wednesdays, feel free to stop by. Read, get read to, borrow a book or two, up-date your SRC numbers (or sign up - it's never too late).

By the way, the Saint John Free Public Library drops by the Centre on Mondays for another round of reading and activities. For more info on these, or any summer programming, call the Centre at 658-2980.

Storytents East: Nason Road Playground

come read with us

In cooperation with the Silver Falls Community Association and the City of Saint John, QLNB running a storytent program in the Michael Crescent area for the second year in a row. You'll find us beside the Nason Road playground, at the top of the hill, between 4 and 6 on Thursdays until August 25th.

storytent in the rain

Storytent is a rain-or-shine program, and so far we've had both, plus some crazy, gusty winds (the only weather that can really shut us down)!

In our storytent program kids and adults read - to themselves, to each other, to us - or get read to. We have books that are easy, books that are hard, and books in-between. Families can also borrow books or sign up to the provincial Summer Reading Club. It's a come-as-you-are drop-in program; no fees, no fines, open to all.

Passport to Parks

Saint John New Brunswick passport to parks

QLNB is excited to again be part of the City of Saint John's 'Passport to Parks' series. On Saturday, June 25th, we joined the gang at Rockwood Park, setting up in the green commons between the refurbished playpark and the lake.

It was a wonderfully sunny day, and we were happy to host nearly 60 children and parents.

Later this summer, we will be re-joining 'Passport 2 Parks' at two locations. On Saturday, July 30, we'll be out at the Little River Reservoir from 1 to 4 (rain date, Sunday, July 31). Then, on Saturday, August 13, we're setting up outside the Carleton Community Centre from noon to 4 (raindate, Sunday, August 14).

Our event storytents are 2 to 4 hour drop-in sessions. Families can join us under the tent canopy to listen to stories being read, read to themselves or each other, or just catch a few moments' relief from the sun.

See you then. :)
